Emotional Intelligence At Work: Be a rat today and pass it forward.
A Swiss research study discovered that rats demonstrated generalized reciprocity — that is, they were generous even with an unknown partner because another rat had just been kind to them.
The study cites previous research showing that humans act the same way — people who have been helped in some way are more likely to help others immediately afterward.
You have heard of generalized reciprocity before in the Pay It Forward book and movie that have now become a movement. Humans, and apparently rats, are wired to be generous. You have probably experienced the effects of this for yourself, but...sometimes we forget.
EQ Tip: You can positively affect the culture of your workplace while fulfilling your natural desire to serve. Make it a point to reach out and help someone today or for the rest of the week and notice what happens.
Enjoy,
